Next Generation 911 (often abbreviated as NG911 or NG9-1-1), is a term used to describe an initiative to update the infrastructure behind the 9-1-1 service in an increasingly wireless mobile society. The goal the Next Generation 911 infrastructure upgrade is to make sure that national 9-1-1 systems can handle text, video and other forms of communication — in addition to handling voice from standard landlines. The updated NG9-1-1 infrastructure would also be able to handle information from any wireless, IP-based, or wired device — making it fully compatible with all future communication methods.

As we move to next generation 911, the need for accurate and current GIS data for public safety becomes more critical. A real-time database of local GIS data will perform location validation (LVF) of the device calling 911, identify emergency service jurisdictions, and route the 911 call to the proper PSAP as part of the Emergency Call Routing Function (ECRF).

The ECRF will assure that your GIS data is used for location (address) verification and validation, placing control of the data back into the hands of the local 911 authorities. With this focus on local GIS data, the ECRF represents an evolution within 911.
